There are many Thai words that have a similar sounding equivalent in English. The confusion that can result from this can lead to interesting consequences.

Secondly, I needed to give it a bit to process and not end up writing something akin to War And Peace‘s longer, more boring sequel. I could have gone into so much detail, but fortunately for everyone I have got that out of my system and can now give the skinny.

My visa currently forces me to leave the country every three months (did I say forces) so I’d organised to meet Spencer in Kuala Lumpur and spend a week in KuChing (SE Malaysia). I actually had no idea where KuChing was when I booked my ticket, but Spence had already booked the Crowne Plaza Riverside (through a deal) so I trusted him.

After I got to KL from Bangers (about 2 hours) Spencer was there to greet me. We had a four hour wait for our flight to KuChing so we caught the 6 ringet bus to the main part of the airport (about 40 min away). En route we passed the running of the final leg of the World Motor GP – so tempted to stop and watch but that would have been step 1 in us missing our flight. Step 2 would have been the beer. Actually, it nearly was.

After walking around KL International main terminal for a bit., we came across a Travellers Bar, which, if it weren’t the only bar in the airport, you would not go into. Anyway, we did and after a few minutes we were called over to have a drink with two Scottish guys, Raymond Elder Snr. & Jnr. They proceeded to by us beers and compete for the “Funniest Scottish Joke of the Afternoon” annual trophy that was coincidentally also being run that day. Even though I could only understand about 2/3 of what they were saying, it was still piss funny, and gave us a start that would set a precedent for the rest of our trip.

After laughing all the way back to the Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) and through most of the plane (afternoon yobbos), we flew over the Sarawak Peninsula into KuChing, which was basically a mass of forest broken up by dozens of river tributaries leading inland. It looked untouched almost completely untouched.

Flying into Sarawak International Airport, KuChing looked like a town that had been droppped in the middle of a jungle (which it basically had). Interestingly, coming from KL to KuChing you have to go through customs. Apparently this reflects Sarawak’s independent state status, although this seems kinda one way as you don’t go through customs coming back into KL from KuChing.

Anyway, we got through customs and made our way to our hotel, the Crowne Plaza Riverside Majestic. As I said before, Spencer had booked one room for himself and his girlfriend, so when we arrived we asked if we could get another room for me. They were more than happy to accomodate us, and I was put on the 6th floor, which also happened to be the floor that all the Malaysia Airlines stewardesses stayed on while in KuChing. Bummer

After a short nanna nap we got some food in the hotel and went out to check out Sunday night action in KuChing. And found a fair bit of fuck all. I think 3 bars that were open. Finally settled on  one, had a couple of beers and were leaving when a large man-girl (debate still rages on this one; I’m adamant it was a fat gay guy, Spence maintains he was a she) called us over to share their Rasberry Vodka. ok.
